Handyman in Airdrie: repairs for Airdrie homes and businesses

Airdrie sits just north of Calgary along the QE II, and it has grown from a small town into a city of its own over the last couple of decades. Plenty of Airdrie residents commute to Calgary, and plenty of Calgarians have moved up the highway for newer homes and a smaller-city feel. Most of the housing is relatively new, built from the 1990s on, with older neighbourhoods near Main Street and Nose Creek.

Kaur Handyman covers Airdrie as well as all four Calgary quadrants. This page covers the repairs Airdrie homes need most, what the open prairie setting means for fences and decks, and how to get a quote by text.

Airdrie housing at a glance

Older Airdrie: Old Town, Big Springs, Jensen, Edgewater, Woodside, Meadowbrook

The older parts of Airdrie, near Main Street, Nose Creek and the original town centre, have homes from the 1970s through the 1990s: bungalows, bi-levels and two-storeys on established lots. Woodside grew up around the golf course. Common jobs:

  • Doors and windows that have shifted and draft
  • Bathroom updates: caulking, faucet cartridges, toilet parts, accessories
  • Fences and decks that have been through many winters
  • Interior painting and drywall repairs
  • Light fixture swaps on existing boxes

2000s to 2010s: Bayside, Canals, Coopers Crossing, Luxstone, Sagewood, Silver Creek, Reunion, Ravenswood, Hillcrest, Windsong

Much of Airdrie's growth happened in these communities. Bayside and Canals are built around a system of man-made canals and pathways. Coopers Crossing, Ravenswood and Hillcrest spread to the south and east, and Reunion and Windsong to the southwest. Homes here are mostly two-storeys, duplexes and townhomes, many now ten to twenty years old. Common jobs:

  • Fence and gate repairs, as builder-installed fences reach the age where posts lean
  • Deck staining and board replacement
  • Drywall repairs in high entryways and stairwells
  • Cabinet hinges and drawer runners in busy kitchens
  • Original builder fixtures ready for an update

Newest: Kings Heights, Cobblestone Creek, Midtown, Southwinds, Chinook Gate

The newest communities on Airdrie's edges are still being built out. Homes in their first few years often show:

  • Nail pops and drywall cracks as framing dries
  • Doors that need adjusting
  • Caulking that shrinks in the first winter
  • Furniture assembly, mounting and fixture swaps after moving in

If your home is still in its builder warranty period, check with the builder first on deficiencies. See new-build deficiencies.

Wind and open prairie

Airdrie sits on open prairie with few natural windbreaks, and many newer communities have young trees that do not yet block much. Wind is a real factor:

  • Fences take constant load, especially solid privacy fences on corner lots and along open land. Posts loosen and gates rack out of square.
  • Gates swing hard in the wind and loosen hinges and latches.
  • Exterior caulking on west-facing walls wears faster.
  • Patio furniture and gazebo kits need proper anchoring.

Fence posts are also subject to frost heave, the same as in Calgary. See fence repair in Calgary; the same advice applies in Airdrie.

Hail and chinooks

Airdrie gets the same summer hailstorms and winter chinooks as Calgary. After a storm, torn window screens, split fence boards and dented trim are common. Chinook melt-and-refreeze cycles push up deck nails and crack caulking. A spring walk around the house catches most of it. See the deck inspection checklist.

Townhomes and condos in Airdrie

Airdrie has many townhome and duplex complexes managed by condo corporations. In these, fences, exterior trim, decks and even exterior doors may belong to the corporation rather than the owner. Check your bylaws or ask your property manager before booking exterior repairs.

Small businesses in Airdrie

Airdrie has a growing small business community along Main Street, in the shopping areas along Yankee Valley Boulevard and 8 Street, near Veterans Boulevard and in the industrial and commercial parks off the highway. Kaur Handyman does shelving, signage hanging, paint, drywall, door hardware and washroom fixes for shops and offices.

Moving to Airdrie

New Airdrie homeowners, especially in newer communities, often have a list right after possession: furniture to build, curtain rods and blinds to hang, TVs to mount and builder light fixtures to swap. See furniture assembly in Calgary; it all applies in Airdrie too.

Townhome and duplex living

Airdrie has a lot of attached housing: duplexes, row townhomes and stacked townhomes, particularly in communities like Reunion, Ravenswood, Coopers Crossing and Kings Heights. Shared walls and shared fences mean a few extra things to think about. Fence repairs on a shared line should be discussed with the neighbour. In complexes run by a condo corporation, decks, fences and exterior doors may not be the owner's to repair. Inside, the usual list applies: drywall, doors, cabinets, caulking and fixtures.

Developed basements in Airdrie homes

Many Airdrie homes, especially in the 2000s and 2010s communities, have had their basements developed after the original build, some professionally and some as owner projects. Common follow-up jobs in developed basements include drywall repairs and painting, door adjustments, trim and baseboard fixes, and finishing touches like shelving and closet systems. If a basement development was never finished, or the electrical or plumbing in it is unpermitted, that needs to be dealt with by licensed trades and the City of Airdrie before finishing work goes on top.

Nose Creek and the older core

The older homes near Main Street and along Nose Creek have mature trees, larger lots and older fences, garages and sheds. Fall leaf drop fills eavestroughs, and older wood fences and sheds near the creek pathways need regular checks on posts and doors.

Questions

Do you serve Airdrie?

Yes. Kaur Handyman covers Airdrie as well as all four Calgary quadrants and Chestermere.

Which Airdrie communities do you cover?

All of them, including Kings Heights, Reunion, Bayside, Canals, Coopers Crossing, Ravenswood, Hillcrest, Windsong, Sagewood, Luxstone, Woodside, Big Springs and the newest areas.

Why does my Airdrie fence keep loosening?

Wind on open prairie lots and frost heave in winter both work fence posts and gates loose. Re-securing, bracing or replacing posts usually fixes it.

Can you do several jobs in one visit to Airdrie?

Yes, and it is the most efficient way. Send all the jobs in one text for one price.

Can you work on my townhome's fence or deck?

If it belongs to you, yes. In many Airdrie townhome complexes, fences and decks belong to the condo corporation, so check first.

Do you work in Airdrie townhome complexes?

Yes, for repairs that belong to the owner. In complexes run by a condo corporation, check whether exterior items like fences and decks belong to the corporation first.
