Handyman in NE Calgary: Saddle Ridge, Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Redstone and more
Northeast Calgary has grown faster than almost any part of the city over the last twenty years. Communities like Saddle Ridge, Taradale and Martindale were joined by Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Redstone, Cornerstone and Savanna, spreading out past Stoney Trail toward the city limits. Closer in, Falconridge, Castleridge, Whitehorn and Pineridge date mostly from the 1970s and 1980s, and the inner northeast, around Bridgeland and Renfrew, is older still.
The northeast is also where some of Calgary's worst hailstorms have landed, including the June 2020 storm that damaged thousands of homes and vehicles. Kaur Handyman works across the northeast. This page covers what we see most, and how to get a quote by text.
Housing in NE Calgary, by era
1970s and 1980s: Pineridge, Whitehorn, Temple, Falconridge, Castleridge, Rundle, Marlborough
These communities around 32 Avenue NE, 36 Street NE and the Blue Line CTrain stations have many bungalows, bi-levels and duplexes, often with basement suites. Common jobs:
- Doors that stick or will not latch after decades of settling
- Bathrooms with failing caulking, loose toilets and worn faucets
- Back-lane fences and gates that lean
- Weatherstripping on older exterior doors
- Drywall and paint between tenants
1990s to 2000s: Martindale, Taradale, Saddle Ridge, Coventry Hills
Martindale and Taradale grew through the 1990s and 2000s, with Saddle Ridge following through the 2000s. Many are two-storey homes, often with large or multi-generational households and many with basement suites. Common jobs:
- Interior paint and drywall in busy homes
- Kitchen cabinet doors and hinges that see heavy daily use
- Fences and decks now reaching the age where boards and posts need attention
- Light fixture swaps in entries and great rooms
- Furniture assembly for growing families
2010s and newer: Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Redstone, Cornerstone, Savanna
The newest northeast communities near Country Hills Boulevard, Métis Trail and Stoney Trail are full of homes in their first decade. Common jobs:
- Nail pops and drywall cracks as framing dries in the first winters
- Doors that need adjusting after the house settles
- Caulking that shrinks and gaps in the first year or two
- Deck and fence work on builder-installed fences and newly built decks
- Furniture assembly and fixture swaps after possession
Some of these are builder warranty items. See new-build deficiencies in Calgary.
Hail in the northeast
The June 2020 hailstorm tore through Saddle Ridge, Taradale, Martindale, Skyview Ranch, Cornerstone and surrounding areas, shredding siding, breaking windows and damaging roofs. Many homes have since had siding and roofs replaced through insurance, but smaller repairs are often left behind: torn screens, dented trim, split fence boards and stained drywall from leaks.
Roof, siding and window glass go to your insurer and specialist contractors. Screens, trim, fences, caulking and small interior repairs are handyman work. See after a Calgary hailstorm.
Basement suites and rentals
The northeast has many homes with basement suites, both legal and older. Landlords and homeowners regularly need:
- Drywall and paint between tenants
- Door hardware and weatherstripping on the suite entrance
- Bathroom fixes and caulking
- Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms tested and replaced
See rental turnover repairs for Calgary landlords.
Fences and wind
Open land on the eastern edge of the city means wind, and northeast fences take it. Combined with frost heave and hail, fence posts lean and gates stop latching. See fence repair in Calgary.
Small businesses in the northeast
The northeast has many small businesses: shops and restaurants along 36 Street NE and in plazas near Saddletowne, offices and warehouses near the airport and in the industrial parks. Kaur Handyman does shelving, signage hanging, paint, drywall, door hardware and washroom fixes for small business spaces.
Families and busy homes
Many northeast homes house large and multi-generational families, which means kitchens, bathrooms, stairs and doors see heavy daily use. Cabinet hinges, drawer runners, door handles, towel bars and toilet parts wear out faster in a busy house. Several small fixes like these are a natural fit for one visit with one quote.
Bi-levels and duplexes
Bi-level homes, with the front door on a landing between two floors, are common across the established northeast. They have their own repair patterns: the entry landing and stairs take heavy wear, the front door faces the weather directly with only a small step outside, and the lower level often has larger windows set partly below grade. Weatherstripping on the front door, handrails on the short stair runs, and window well and window caulking are regular jobs. Many duplexes in Pineridge, Rundle and Whitehorn share a fence line and a party wall, so talk to the neighbour about shared fences before repairs.
Seasonal notes for the northeast
Open land and the wide streets near the city's eastern edge leave many northeast homes exposed to wind, so gates and fence panels need checking each spring. After any summer hail warning, a quick photo walkaround of screens, fence boards and trim makes it easy to get small repairs quoted while roofers and siding crews are booked up.
