Furniture assembly in Calgary: what to expect
Flat-pack furniture is cheaper to ship and easier to carry up a condo elevator, but someone still has to put it together. A bed frame can take an evening. A large wardrobe with sliding doors can take most of a day if you have never built one before, and it is a two-person job when it is time to stand it up.
Kaur Handyman assembles furniture across Calgary, from a single bookcase to a full move-in. This guide explains what is involved, what to have ready, how to get a quote, and a few safety points, like anchoring tall furniture, that are easy to skip.
What we assemble
Most furniture that comes in a box with instructions and hardware:
- Bedroom: bed frames, platform beds, bunk beds, dressers, nightstands, wardrobes and closet systems
- Living room: TV stands, media units, bookcases, shelving, coffee tables, side tables
- Office: desks, standing desks, office chairs, filing cabinets, shelving
- Kids: cribs, change tables, bunk beds, toy storage
- Outdoor: patio sets, gazebos and pergola kits, storage boxes, outdoor sectionals
- Business: office desks, reception furniture, shelving, display units for shops
Big box store furniture, online orders and boxed kits from any retailer are all fine. If you are not sure whether something counts, send a photo of the box or a link to the product.
How a quote works
Assembly time depends on the piece, not just the size. A large but simple bookcase can be quicker than a small dresser with six drawers and soft-close runners. To quote accurately, we need to know exactly what is being built.
Send a text with:
- A photo of each box label, or the product name and model number
- How many of each piece
- Where it is going: which floor, and whether there are stairs or an elevator
- Whether any piece needs to be anchored to the wall
- Your neighbourhood and the days that suit you
You get a price back before anything is booked. See how handyman pricing works in Calgary.
What to have ready
- Boxes in or near the room where the furniture will go, if you can manage it. Large wardrobes may be too heavy to move once built.
- Space to work. Most pieces need floor space about twice their footprint while being built.
- All the boxes. Some furniture ships in several boxes. Check you have them all before the visit.
- Wall information. If anything is being anchored, know if the wall is drywall over wood studs, concrete or something else. In condos, concrete walls are common.
Unpacking the boxes ahead of time is not necessary, and it is better not to separate the hardware bags from the parts.
Anchoring tall furniture
Tall dressers, bookcases and wardrobes can tip if a child climbs them or a drawer is pulled out with a heavy load. Most flat-pack furniture now ships with an anti-tip kit for this reason. It is worth using.
Anchoring is done into a wall stud where possible. On concrete walls, which are common in Calgary high-rise condos, it needs concrete anchors and a hammer drill. In some condos, drilling into certain walls needs approval, so check your bylaws. See condo repairs in Calgary.
Common problems we fix
- Furniture that wobbles because it was assembled out of square or with cam locks not fully turned
- Drawers that do not close evenly, often from runners installed upside down or at slightly different heights
- Doors that do not line up on wardrobes and cabinets, fixed by adjusting the hinges
- Missing or stripped hardware, often replaceable with standard parts
- Furniture that needs moving and rebuilding after a move, which is easier than many people think if it is taken apart carefully
Beds and bunk beds
Bed frames are one of the most common requests. Bunk beds and loft beds need extra care: every bolt tightened properly, guard rails installed and the ladder secured.
Moving into a new place
Furniture assembly is often part of a bigger move-in list: mounting curtain rods, hanging mirrors and art, changing light fixtures, adjusting doors. If you have just moved to Calgary, or to a new neighbourhood, see your first-month handyman list. Putting it all in one visit is usually the most efficient.
Small business and office assembly
New desks for a growing team, shelving for a shop stockroom, display units for a retail space in Kensington or 17 Avenue: Kaur Handyman assembles for businesses too, and can work around your opening hours where possible. See handyman maintenance for Calgary small businesses.
Mounting TVs, shelves and mirrors
Assembly visits often include mounting. A few things to know:
- TV mounts should go into studs on drywall walls, or into concrete with proper anchors. Check the mount is rated for the TV's weight and size.
- Floating shelves look simple but need solid fastening, since the load hangs off the wall.
- Large mirrors are heavy and need anchors rated for the weight, or a cleat.
- Hiding TV cables inside the wall involves cutting drywall and may involve electrical work if a new outlet is wanted. A new outlet needs a licensed electrician; a surface cable cover does not.
Common problems with self-assembled furniture
If you started an assembly and it went sideways, it can usually be rescued. The usual culprits are cam locks only half turned, a back panel nailed on out of square so the whole piece racks, dowels missing from one joint, and drawers built with left and right runners swapped. Fixing them often means partly taking the piece apart, so it helps to send a photo before going further.
Disposal of boxes and packaging
Flat-pack furniture comes with a lot of cardboard and foam. In Calgary, flattened cardboard goes in the blue cart, and the City's rules on what can go in each cart and what needs a depot trip are worth checking for foam and large plastic. Let us know in your quote request if you want packaging handled, so it can be agreed up front.
A note on patio furniture and outdoor kits
Patio sets and gazebo kits are popular in Calgary for the short summer season, and they often go up in a rush in May and June. Gazebos and pergola kits should be anchored against Calgary wind; check the manufacturer's instructions for anchoring to a deck or patio. Outdoor furniture can also take a hit during summer hailstorms, so it is a good idea to know where cushions and umbrellas will go when a storm warning comes.
