Calgary fall handyman checklist: get your home ready for winter

Calgary fall is short. One week the leaves are turning along the Bow River pathways, and the next there is snow on the patio furniture. September snow is not unusual here, and once the ground freezes, a lot of outdoor jobs either get harder or have to wait until spring. This checklist covers the small repairs worth doing before winter sets in, in the order that makes sense for a Calgary house.

Most of these are quick jobs. Some you can do yourself in an afternoon. The rest are good candidates for a single handyman visit where several small fixes are done at once.

Why fall matters more in Calgary

Calgary winters are not just cold. They swing. A chinook can push the temperature well above freezing in a few hours in January, melt the snow off the roof and the deck, and then the cold returns overnight. That melt-and-refreeze cycle works water into every gap it can find. A cracked caulk joint, a loose deck board or a fence post with water pooling at the base gets worse with every cycle.

The other factor is dry air. Indoor humidity drops a lot once the furnace runs full time. Wood trim shrinks, doors shift in their frames, and gaps that were tight in August open up. Fall is the time to seal things while products can still cure properly outdoors. Read more in what chinooks do to your house.

Outside: before the first hard freeze

Caulking on windows and exterior doors

Walk around the house and look at the caulk where window frames and door trim meet the siding. Look for cracks, gaps, or caulk that has pulled away on one side. South- and west-facing windows take the most sun and usually fail first. Most exterior caulks list a minimum application temperature on the tube, so this is a job for a mild fall day, not late November. See the full guide to caulking and sealing in Calgary.

Exterior taps and hoses

Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor taps. A hose left attached holds water in the tap, and that water can freeze and split the pipe inside the wall. If your home has an interior shut-off valve for the outdoor tap, close it and open the outside tap to drain. Many Calgary homes built in recent decades have frost-free hose bibs, but they still need the hose removed to work as designed.

Fence gates and latches

Gates that barely latch in October usually stop latching by January, when frost heave lifts one post and not the other. Check that gates swing freely, latch without lifting, and that hinge screws are tight. Tighten or replace hinges now, while the ground is not frozen and posts can still be adjusted. More on this in fence repair in Calgary.

Deck boards and railings

Look for boards that move underfoot, nails that have backed out, and railings that wobble. Popped nails are a trip hazard under snow and can catch a shovel. Replace them with deck screws. A loose railing is worth fixing before ice makes the deck slippery.

Eavestrough and downspouts

Leaves in the eavestroughs hold water, and in spring that water can freeze into ice dams. Clear them once most leaves have dropped. Check that downspout extensions point away from the house and are not crushed. Water dumping next to the foundation in a spring thaw is a common cause of damp basements.

Window screens

Torn screens from summer hail are easier to fix now than in spring. Removing and storing them can also help them last longer.

Inside: draft-proofing and small fixes

Weatherstripping on exterior doors

Close each exterior door on a strip of paper. If the paper slides out easily, the seal is not touching. Look for daylight around the frame from inside on a sunny day. Compressed, torn or missing weatherstripping is one of the cheapest things to replace and makes a noticeable difference on a minus 25 night. Full details are in our weatherstripping and draft-proofing guide.

Door sweeps and thresholds

The gap under the front door and the door from the garage are common drafts. A door sweep or an adjusted threshold closes it up. The door from an attached garage also matters for keeping exhaust and cold out of the house.

Caulking around tubs and showers

Indoor caulk is not weather-dependent, but fall is a good time to redo it since it gets checked along with everything else. Mildew under the caulk or gaps at the corners mean it is time.

Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Test them. Replace batteries. Check the date on the back, since alarms have a replacement date printed by the manufacturer. With the furnace running, CO alarms matter most in winter.

Furnace filter

Change it before the heating season starts. A clean filter helps the furnace run as intended.

Garage door to the house

Check that the door from the attached garage seals and latches properly, since it keeps exhaust and cold out of the house all winter.

A simple timeline for Calgary

Calgary weather does not stick to a calendar, but this rough order works most years:

  1. Early September: exterior caulking, any exterior paint touch-ups, deck and fence repairs while the ground is soft.
  2. Late September to mid October: weatherstripping, door sweeps, screens, gate adjustments.
  3. After the leaves drop: eavestroughs, downspouts, disconnecting hoses.
  4. Before the first deep cold: check the house is sealed, alarms are tested, and the furnace filter is fresh.

If you only get one thing done, make it the hoses and outdoor taps. A split pipe inside a wall is a far bigger job than anything else on this list.

Doing it in one visit

Most of this list is made of small jobs. On their own, each one feels like it is not worth calling someone for. Together, they make a sensible half day. Write your list, take a photo of each item, and send them in one text. You will get one price for the lot. See how handyman pricing works in Calgary and the full list of services.

Questions

When should I winterize my house in Calgary?

Start in early September with outdoor work like caulking and fence or deck repairs, since snow can arrive by late September. Finish indoor draft-proofing and hose disconnection by mid October.

Can exterior caulking be done in cold weather?

Most exterior caulks list a minimum application temperature on the tube. In Calgary that usually means doing it on a mild fall day, not after the first hard freeze.

Do I need to disconnect my garden hose for winter?

Yes. A hose left attached traps water in the tap, which can freeze and crack the pipe inside the wall, even on frost-free taps.

Can a handyman do my whole fall list in one visit?

Usually, yes. Send a photo of each item in one text and you get one price for the visit.

Do you service furnaces?

No. Furnace and gas work need a licensed gas fitter or HVAC technician in Alberta. Changing a filter is something most homeowners can do themselves.
