How handyman pricing works in Calgary
If you are trying to work out what a handyman will cost in Calgary, the honest answer is that it depends on the job. That is not a dodge. Two drywall patches can look the same in a listing and take very different amounts of time once you see the wall, the texture and the paint. This guide explains what actually drives the price of handyman work in Calgary, what you can do to keep it down, and why sending a photo by text is the fastest way to get a real number.
Kaur Handyman does not publish a price list. Every job is quoted on its own, for free, and you get the price before anything is booked.
What goes into a handyman price
Most handyman quotes are built from the same handful of pieces. Knowing them makes it easier to compare quotes and to see where your own job sits.
Time on site
Time is the biggest part of most small jobs. A cabinet hinge takes minutes. A full room of trim painting takes days. The time estimate includes setup and cleanup, not just the moment the tool touches the job. Drop sheets, masking, moving furniture away from a wall and vacuuming drywall dust afterwards are all real time.
Drying and curing time
Some work cannot be done in one pass. Drywall compound needs to dry between coats. Paint needs time before a second coat. Exterior caulking has to cure before it sees rain. A job that needs three thin coats of mud may mean coming back, and the quote has to account for that. Calgary's dry air helps here, since compound and paint often dry faster than in humid cities, but the label on the product still sets the minimum.
Materials
Materials are either supplied by you or picked up by us. Both work. It is agreed in the quote so there are no surprises. If you already have the paint, the light fixture or the flat-pack box, the quote covers labour. If we pick things up, the quote includes them and the trip to get them.
Access and height
A bathroom fan cover at two metres is one thing. A light fixture in a vaulted great room or a second-storey window on a walkout lot is another. Ladders, scaffolding needs and tight crawl spaces add time and care.
Surprises behind the surface
Some jobs only reveal themselves once opened up. A soft spot on a deck board may stop at one board or continue into the joist. A fence post that leans might just need resetting, or the bottom may have rotted off at grade. A good quote names the likely risk up front, so you know what might change and why.
Travel and parking
Kaur Handyman covers all four Calgary quadrants plus Airdrie and Chestermere. Distance can play a part, and so can parking. A downtown condo with paid underground visitor parking, or a Beltline street with permit-only spots, is a different visit from a driveway in Evergreen. Let us know about parking in your text.
Why a photo gets you a better quote
A written description like "small hole in the wall" can mean a doorknob dent or a fist-sized hole with a broken stud behind it. A photo settles it in seconds. Here is what to send:
- One wide photo that shows the whole area, so we can see the room, the height and what is nearby.
- One close photo of the damage or the part, with something for scale if you can (a hand, a tape measure, a coin).
- For installs, a photo of the box or the product listing, so we know what is being assembled or mounted.
- Your neighbourhood or nearest main road, and the days that suit you.
That is usually enough for a price. If it is not, you get a question back rather than a guess.
How to keep the price down
Small changes on your side can cut the time on site.
- Batch your jobs. A list of five small fixes in one visit costs less in total than five separate visits. Keep a running note on your phone of loose handles, sticky doors and caulking that needs redoing. Our fall checklist is a good starting point.
- Clear the work area. Moving a dresser away from a wall or emptying a vanity before we arrive saves time you would otherwise pay for.
- Buy the right materials, or let us. Returning the wrong light fixture or the wrong caulk is a lost trip. If you are unsure, ask before you buy.
- Fix things while they are small. A failing caulk line at the tub is a quick job. Water behind the tiles is not.
- Be clear about the finish you expect. A garage wall patch and a living-room wall under a pot light are different standards. Say which one you want.
Job size: small jobs are welcome
Many people assume a handyman will not want a single small job. Kaur Handyman takes them. Swapping one light fixture, hanging a mirror or adjusting a door that rubs are all normal requests. If you have a few, put them in one text and they will be quoted together.
For bigger lists, like a rental turnover between tenants or a pre-sale tidy, the quote covers the whole list so you can see the full picture before you commit.
Comparing quotes fairly
If you get more than one quote, check that they cover the same things:
- Are materials included, and which ones?
- Does it include cleanup and disposal of old parts?
- For painting and drywall repair, how many coats, and is primer included?
- For furniture assembly, does it include anchoring tall pieces to the wall?
- Is a return visit needed for drying time, and is it included?
A lower number that leaves out half of these is not cheaper in the end.
Calgary factors that affect pricing
Calgary's climate shapes some jobs in ways people from milder places do not expect.
- The exterior season is short. Exterior painting and caulking depend on temperatures the product label allows, and Calgary can see snow in September or May. Outdoor work packs into late spring and summer, so book early.
- Freeze-thaw is hard on outdoor work. Chinooks can swing temperatures well above freezing in a winter afternoon and back down overnight. Fence posts, deck boards and exterior caulking take a beating, and that can turn a quick fix into a slightly bigger one.
- Hail season brings spikes in demand. After a big summer storm, many people want screens, trim and fences looked at the same week.
- Dry air changes indoor work. Low winter humidity makes wood shrink, which opens gaps in trim and makes doors rattle or stick at different times of year.
Payment and what happens after the quote
Once you have the price and agree on a time, the job gets done. Payment is by Interac e-Transfer, cash or bank draft. If something unexpected shows up once a job is opened, you hear about it before any extra work happens.
