Guides
Handyman services in Calgary: the complete guide
A handyman takes care of the jobs that are too small for a contractor and too fiddly, time-consuming or awkward to do yourself. In Calgary, that list is long: drywall cracks from dry winter air, fence posts lifted by frost, caulking cracked by chinooks, screens torn by hail, and the furniture, fixtures and small fixes that come with every move.
This guide is the starting point for everything on the Kaur Handyman blog. It explains what a handyman does, where the line sits with licensed trades in Alberta, how the Calgary seasons shape the work, how pricing and quotes work, and where we work. Each section links to a more detailed guide.

If your job is not on the list, ask anyway. The full list is on the services section of the main site.
What needs a licensed trade in Alberta
Some work is not handyman work. In Alberta, these go to licensed trades:
- Electrical: new wiring, new circuits, new fixture locations, switches, outlets and panel work. Swapping an existing light fixture is handyman work; adding a new one is not.
- Plumbing: new plumbing lines, moving fixtures, shut-off valves, drains and leaks inside walls. Fixes at the fixture, like cartridges, flappers and caulking, are handyman work.
- Gas: anything involving gas lines or gas appliances.
- Structural: foundations, load-bearing walls, deck ledgers and beams.
How Calgary's climate shapes the work
Calgary's weather is behind a lot of handyman calls. Knowing the patterns helps you plan.
Chinooks and freeze-thaw
Warm chinook winds melt snow in hours, and the cold returns overnight. Those cycles crack caulking, pop deck nails, lift fence posts and open drywall seams. See what chinooks do to your house.
Dry air
Calgary's dry air, especially indoors in winter, shrinks wood framing and trim. That means nail pops, seasonal cracks and doors that stick in one season and rattle in another.
Hail
Summer hailstorms can be severe. Some damage goes to your insurer, roofer or siding contractor; screens, trim, fences and caulking are handyman work. See after a Calgary hailstorm.
A short outdoor season
Exterior painting, staining and caulking need suitable temperatures, and Calgary can see snow from September to May. Outdoor work concentrates in late spring and summer.
Seasonal checklists
- Fall: sealing up before winter. See the fall handyman checklist.
- Winter: draft-proofing and indoor projects like painting.
- Spring: deck and fence checks once the snow is gone.
- Summer: exterior painting and staining, hail repairs.
Who uses a handyman
Homeowners
From a single light fixture to a full list, most calls come from homeowners. If you have just moved, see your first-month handyman list. If you own a new home in its first years, see new-build deficiencies. If you are selling, see the pre-listing repair list.
Condo owners
Condo repairs come with building rules and a split between your unit and common property. See condo repairs in Calgary.
Landlords
Between tenants, small repairs pile up fast. See rental turnover repairs for Calgary landlords.
Small businesses
Shops, offices, studios and units need regular small fixes too. See handyman maintenance for Calgary small businesses.
Older homes
Character homes in the inner city have their own needs. See character homes in inner-city Calgary.
How pricing and quotes work
Every job is quoted for free, and you get the price before anything is booked. Pricing depends on the job: time on site, drying time, materials, access and travel. Materials are either supplied by you or picked up by us, agreed in the quote. Payment is by Interac e-Transfer, cash or bank draft. See how handyman pricing works in Calgary.
The fastest way to a quote is a text with:
- A wide photo and a close-up of each job
- Your neighbourhood or nearest main road
- The days that suit you
Several jobs in one text get one price for the visit.

What a visit looks like
Once the price is agreed and a time is set, a typical visit runs like this. The work area is protected with drop sheets where needed. The jobs on the list are done in a sensible order, so anything that needs drying time, like drywall compound or caulking, starts first and other jobs carry on while it dries. Old parts and packaging are dealt with as agreed in the quote. Before leaving, the list is walked through with you so you can see each item finished. If something unexpected came up, like rot behind a fence board or damaged wiring behind a fixture, you hear about it before any extra work is done, and you decide what happens next.
Choosing a handyman
A few questions are worth asking any handyman:
- Do you quote before work starts, and is the quote free?
- Who supplies materials, and is that in the quote?
- What happens if the job turns out bigger than expected?
- Which parts of my job need a licensed trade?
- How do you take payment?
Clear answers to those questions up front make for a smoother job.
